Puyol doubtful for PSG clash after knee surgery

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 16 Maret 2013 | 08.10

MADRID (Reuters) - Barcelona's inspirational captain Carles Puyol may miss next month's Champions League quarter-final tie against Paris St Germain after he needed surgery on his right knee on Friday.

The 34-year-old Spain centre back, who has suffered a series of injuries over the past year and missed Euro 2012, had arthroscopic surgery at a clinic in the Catalan capital, Barca said in a statement on their website (www.fcbarcelona.es).

The La Liga leaders did not say how long he would be sidelined but said surgeons Ramon Cugat and Ricard Pruna, who performed the operation, would hold a news conference on Saturday to provide more information.

Barca play their quarter-final, first leg at PSG on April 2 and the return leg is at the Nou Camp on April 10. (Reporting by Iain Rogers; Editing by John O'Brien)

England solid at lunch in second test v New Zealand

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 14 Maret 2013 | 08.10

By Greg Stutchbury

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - England's Nick Compton and Jonathan Trott negated any slim advantage New Zealand may have hoped to get from the Basin Reserve pitch to guide the visitors to 75 for one at lunch on the first day of the second test on Thursday.

Compton was on 34 while Trott was on 23 at the break.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum had won the toss and chose to bowl at a sun-drenched Basin Reserve to extract whatever assistance they could get from the pitch expected to offer more pace and bounce than University Oval in Dunedin.

England captain Alastair Cook (17) was the only wicket to fall when he appeared to get through his shot a little ahead of the delivery from left arm pace bowler Neil Wagner and it spooned to Peter Fulton at mid-on.

Cook had looked comfortable at the crease before his dismissal and shook his head as he despondently walked off.

Apart from the early breakthrough, New Zealand's bowlers squandered the best of the bowling conditions with the new ball, failing to force the England batsmen to play at deliveries while Trent Boult in particular bowled both sides of the wicket.

Compton, who scored his maiden test century in the second innings in the drawn first test at University Oval in Dunedin, demonstrated his new found confidence with two sumptuous shots off Wagner immediately after Cook was dismissed.

The first was pulled just behind square to the leg side boundary and he then smashed a drive to the extra cover boundary two balls later.

Both sides were unchanged from the drawn first test, with McCullum expressing such confidence in his side after their performance in Dunedin he told reporters on Wednesday the team would be the same.

England batsman Kevin Pietersen had been under an injury cloud before the match with a knee issue that had forced him from the field several times in Dunedin, but Cook said at the toss he had recovered enough to take his place in the lineup.

The third and final match of the series is at Eden Park in Auckland from March 22-26.

Pellegrini lauds players for staying focused on football

MALAGA, Spain (Reuters) - Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini praised his players for keeping their focus through a turbulent period for the Qatari-owned club after they eliminated Porto on Wednesday to advance to the Champions League last eight on their debut in the competition.

Malaga's long-suffering fans have endured a roller-coaster ride since Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani, a member of the Qatar royal family, bought the Costa del Sol club in 2010 after they narrowly avoided relegation.

Hefty investment in players and the hiring of former Real Madrid and Villarreal coach Pellegrini yielded a top-four finish last term and a place in Europe's elite club competition.

However, things apparently began to unravel over the summer and while rumours Al Thani was looking to bail out went unanswered top players like Santi Cazorla were sold off to raise cash.

There appeared to be a power vacuum, with local officials keeping the club running as much in the dark as players, coaching staff, fans and journalists.

Al Thani's lieutenant eventually announced Malaga were undergoing an "internal restructuring" to bring them into line with UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules.

Outstanding debts to players, staff and other clubs began to be settled and a measure of calm returned.

The season began in mid-August and Pellegrini and his squad showed they were not distracted by institutional woes with a series of impressive performances that lifted them to first place in Champions League Group C ahead of AC Milan.

A 1-0 home win over the seven-times European Cup winners will live long in the memory of those who were at the Rosaleda.

Their dream run appeared to be coming to an end after 2004 winners Porto beat them 1-0 in last month's last 16 first leg in Portugal.

But inspired by highly-rated playmaker Isco and playing with a man extra after Porto midfielder Steven Defour was sent off just after halftime, Malaga stormed back on Wednesday to win 2-0 on the night and advance 2-1 on aggregate.

"The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible and the fans deserved a victory like this," Pellegrini said in an interview with Spanish television broadcaster Canal Plus.

"It has been an unusual year," added the Chilean when questioned about Malaga's financial difficulties.

"The team deserves a lot of credit for what they have done both in the domestic league and the Champions League.

"They maintained their focus on the sporting side and had the capacity to get to grips with all the other problems.

"Then there was a positive atmosphere coming from a desire to help the club and the players deserve huge praise for that."

EXPERIENCED CAMPAIGNERS

Malaga's success has been built around a squad mixing experienced campaigners like Argentine centre back Martin Demichelis, French midfielder Jeremy Toulalan and Paraguay forward Roque Santa Cruz and youngsters like Isco.

The talented 20-year-old, who is on the fringes of the Spanish national team, was voted by coaches the 'revelation player' of La Liga last season and he won the 'Golden Boy' trophy as the best Under-21 player in Europe.

But it is Malaga's old timers who have really underpinned their success and Santa Cruz came off the bench on Wednesday to seal their passage to the last eight.

"It's all about their personalities," Pellegrini said.

"They are all winners who have come from very important clubs who are used to Champions League success," he added.

"It is different at Malaga and I also experienced something similar at Villarreal.

"Every victory seems worth double when you are playing in the competition for the first time.

"Now we are among the eight best teams in Europe and we will do our best to get through to the semi-finals." (Writing by Iain Rogers in Madrid, editing by Ed Osmond)

BHP Billiton faces probe over Olympics hospitality

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 13 Maret 2013 | 08.10

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - BHP Billiton Ltd, the world's largest miner, said it was cooperating with anti-corruption authorities following reports of a U.S.-Australian probe into its sponsorship of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Australia's Fairfax Media earlier reported that the U.S. Department of Justice and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) were investigating allegations that BHP provided inducements, hospitality and gifts to Chinese and other foreign officials.

The U.S. Justice Department told Fairfax, in response to a freedom of information request, it was conducting "law enforcement proceedings" involving BHP, which supplied the materials for gold, silver and bronze medals used in Beijing. The Department of Justice declined to comment after U.S. office hours on Tuesday.

The AFP confirmed it had been working with foreign counterparts and local regulators on Australian aspects of the U.S. investigation, without providing further details.

BHP said it had been cooperating with "relevant authorities" and believed it had complied with all applicable laws in regards to its Olympics sponsorship.

"BHP Billiton is fully committed to operating with integrity and the Group's policies specifically prohibit engaging in bribery in all its forms," BHP said.

BHP has been under investigation for possible corrupt practices in China and other countries including Cambodia since at least 2009.

Fairfax reported that between 2000 and 2008, BHP spent millions of dollars on a major Olympics sponsorship deal and hospitality package which according to a former China staffer involved more than 170 VIPs, including senior government officials and Chinese steel and mineral company CEOs.

Unlike most major consumer focused sponsors, BHP's involvement at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was targeted mostly at its close circle of Chinese buyers and employees.

"Most sponsorships focus on media buys and advertising. We've done almost none," Maria McCarthy, the head of BHP's Olympic sponsorship team, told Reuters in March 2008.

"Instead, we are focusing on community leveraging, stakeholder leveraging that involves governments and customers, and our staff," she said.

BHP was not one of the 12 sponsors in the International Olympic Committee's elite "TOP" programme - companies such as Coca Cola, Adidas, McDonalds and Johnson & Johnson who paid for the right to market themselves worldwide as partners.

The miner was instead a local sponsor, as it had been for the 2000 Games in Sydney, paying Beijing organisers an undisclosed amount of money and providing materials for the 6,000 or so medals required for the Olympics and Paralympics.

At the time, BHP was championing market pricing for iron ore from annual contracts, a move that drew an angry response from Chinese steel mills forced to pay much more for raw materials as demand soared. Milan coach Allegri rues missed chances against Barca

By Iain Rogers

BARCELONA (Reuters) - It was hard not to feel sorry for AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri and his players after they were on the wrong end of a Barcelona backlash in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Milan gave themselves a great opportunity to oust the pre-competition favourites after surprising them 2-0 in last month's last 16, first leg at the San Siro.

However, Lionel Messi and his inspired team mates crushed the Italians 4-0 in the return game to progress to the last eight 4-2 on aggregate and keep alive their dream of a third European crown in five years.

Milan could have progressed with an away goal at a tense Nou Camp until the 92nd minute when Jordi Alba struck to kill them off and they had almost levelled at 1-1 on the night when M'Baye Niang struck a post moments before Messi's second.

"For a matter of a few centimetres, maybe if Niang had scored, we would be here talking about a different game," Allegri told a news conference.

"After we went 3-0 down we still tried to pressure them and we managed to create chances," he added.

"But when you are playing Barcelona and you have around five or seven opportunities to score you have to take them.

"Milan tonight played a worse match than the first leg and in the first half an hour they did not let us play."

DIFFERENT STORY

After their failed bid for an eighth European crown, Milan, who are third in Serie A, must now focus on getting back into Europe's elite club competition again next season.

There are many positives for Allegri and his young side, not least their fine first-leg performance when Barca were unable to penetrate a well-organised defences and Messi was well shackled.

It was a different story in Tuesday's second leg when Messi's fifth-minute opener set the tone for the night and Barcelona were back to their dominant best.

"When you see (Andres) Iniesta dribbling the ball effortlessly in the 90th minute you can understand a lot of things," Allegri said.

"We were very good in the first leg but Barca's potential did not change," he added.

"They are the strongest team in the world and they have three extraordinary players in Messi, Xavi and Iniesta." (Reporting by Iain Rogers, editing by Ken Ferris)

BlackBerry shares rally on ATT launch, takeover hopes

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 12 Maret 2013 | 08.10

By Euan Rocha

TORONTO (Reuters) - BlackBerry shares rose 14 percent on Monday, fueled by takeover speculation and news that AT&T Inc will start selling the new BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen smartphone in the United States on March 22.

The speculation was sparked by a comment from the head of China's Lenovo Group Ltd <0992.HK>, who told a French newspaper on Monday that the personal computer maker might consider an acquisition of Canada's BlackBerry at some point in the future.

"External growth remains a question of opportunities," said Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo's CEO, in an interview with Les Échos.

"As for BlackBerry, the file could eventually make sense, but I must first analyze the market and understand the exact weight of this company," he said in response to a question about whether Lenovo would make a move on the smartphone maker.

Figure skating-Fernandez enjoys last laugh over bullies

By Pritha Sarkar

(Reuters) - Growing up in a city awash with macho sporting icons, Javier Fernandez was mercilessly teased by schoolboy bullies who seemed to think he spent his time twirling around the ice on his toes in a tutu.

Fernandez has no idea where his tormentors have disappeared to but chances are they would have noted how successful their fellow pupil who chose to pursue a "girl's sport" has become.

The 21-year-old was having the last laugh in January when he became the first Spaniard to strike gold at the European figure skating championships by winning the men's title.

"In Spain they don't see skating as a boy's sport. So sometimes it was hard to admit that I wanted to be a skater," Madrid-born Fernandez told Reuters in a telephone interview as he prepared for this week's world championships in London, Ontario.

"When I was in school and said I'm a figure skater, in Spain they see figure skating like ballet, like something for girls.

"So they are always going to judge you in a bad way and say bad things about you. It's hard when people in your country think ice skating is a girl's sport. I was teased about being a skater but I didn't really care a lot."

It was just as well Fernandez developed a thick skin when he was still in school, because had he buckled under the pressure, he would not have been credited with putting Spain on the figure skating map.

"In a country with so many sporting champions, it's hard to fight for attention with sports such as soccer, tennis, F1, cycling as they win many competitions. But I'm hoping to make figure skating one of the top sports in Spain too," Fernandez, who tried a number of mainstream sports before losing his heart to figure skating, said with a distinctive Canadian twang.

GOLDEN AGE

The nation is currently enjoying a golden age in sports, with the country's soccer team being reigning world and European champions, tennis player Rafa Nadal owning 11 grand slam titles and Fernando Alonso steering his way to two Formula One championships.

Despite so many world class athletes coming off the Spanish production line, Fernandez was taken aback with the recognition he received for larking about as Charlie Chaplin in Zagreb's Dom Sportova arena.

"After the Europeans, I got the kind of letters of congratulations I was not expecting to receive. I even got one from the King and Queen of Spain," he said his voice trailing off in a whisper.

"I got one from the President (of Spain). I got one from (soccer club) Real Madrid as they are my team and that was very impressive for me. It was a very nice letter that I have saved."

Getting to a level that would get him noticed in Spain, let alone around the world did not happen overnight for Fernandez.

He initially showcased his ability to pull off soaring triple Axels, Salchows, loops and toeloops in annual summer camps run in Spain by 2006 Olympic champion Yevgeny Plushenko's coach Alexei Mishin.

NEW HEIGHTS

However, with no year-round skating pedigree to fall back on in his home city, Fernandez relocated to New Jersey aged 17, then travelled to Moscow before settling in Toronto where he is now coached by former world champion Brian Orser.

Under Orser, who guided South Korea's Kim Yuna to Olympic glory in Vancouver three years ago, Fernandez has reached new heights as he is one of the few skaters able to execute three quadruple jumps in one programme.

That high-risk strategy not only paid off at the Europeans but he also became the first Spaniard to win gold at a Grand Prix event, beating twice world champion Patrick Chan on home ice in Skate Canada last October.

Despite his run of success, Fernandez did not want to get carried away at the prospect of beating Chan again this week.

"It's true that I have already beaten the world champion this season but that was only one competition and Patrick Chan is a master on the ice. Of course I want to be first but my main goal is to be in the top five."

Should he clinch the gold medal on Friday, Fernandez will head into next February's Sochi Winter Games as world champion but hopes it does not mean he will end up with an unwanted headache.

"I like being recognised a little bit. It's always nice to know that people love you a little bit and know what you are doing but I would not like to be famous like a soccer player who can't get rid of the cameras," he said. "I would definitely not like to be in that position. That may be why I chose figure skating." (Reporting by Pritha Sarkar in London; Editing by Frank Pingue)

AP police releases sketches of bicycle used in twin blasts

Written By Unknown on Senin, 11 Maret 2013 | 08.10

Hyderabad, Mar 10 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh police has released sketches of a bicycle used in the twin bomb blasts in Dilsukhnagar here last month which killed 17 and had injured more than 100 people. Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dwaraka Tirumala Rao released the sketches of a damaged bicycle here tonight. Since the rear portion of the bicycle is totally damaged and only its front portion is available, it can be concluded that the explosive charge had been fixed on the bicycle's carriage, Rao said. The bicycle's damaged parts found in front of the Anand Tiffin Centre at Konark Theatre revealed that it was assembled with parts of bicycles manufactured by different companies, he said. The bicycle's main frame, handle bar, bumpers and fork belong to Atlas company, while the front rim was manufactured by Usha, he said. Giving further details of the bicycle, he said that the front tyre was manufactured by a company called Ganga in April last year, while its front tube is Gamra (Ganga) which was manufactured in October last year. The bicycle's chain was a heavy duty 'KW', made in England. It was learnt that this product was available in the market three years ago, but became unavailable later, due to its high cost, Rao said. It was presumed that offenders behind the blasts might have taken shelter in rented houses for about one or two months before the blast of February 21, he said. A thorough examination revealed that the bicycle's upper and bottom fork cups were replaced recently with 'BM' make cups and these were not fixed properly, probably due to lack of expertise, he said.
