Tiger says McIlroy should choose words more carefully

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 02 Maret 2013 | 08.10

By Simon Evans

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida (Reuters) - Tiger Woods, who has endured his share of controversy and media scrutiny, said world number one Rory McIlroy should choose his words more carefully after withdrawing from the Honda Classic with what was initially a mysterious explanation.

Before driving away from the PGA National course on Friday after a nightmare start to his round, McIlroy told reporters: "I'm not in a great place mentally. I can't really say much, guys. I'm just in a bad place mentally."

Later, in a statement, the 23-yerar-old Northern Irishman said he was having pain with a wisdom tooth and that he was unable to concentrate.

Former world number one and 14-times major winner Woods was asked after his second consecutive even-par 70, whether he had talked to McIlroy about handling the media focus.

"He's just got to be more -- just got to think about it a little bit more before you say something or do something," said Woods. "It can get out of hand, especially when you get into social media and start tweeting and all those different things that can go wrong."

Woods has seen both sides of the media, having been elevated to superstar status during his glory years and then watching his marriage fall apart in the public eye after a series of affairs came to light.

He has also had to deal with constant questioning of his ability to get back to his best, changes of coach, re-worked swing and injuries that led him to withdraw from tournaments.

Woods is 14 years McIlroy's senior and says the media is a very different beast to when he first become world number one and was the centre of attention.

"I've been through it for a long time. But also this is a slightly different era, as well. It's even faster than what it was when I came out," said Woods. "Things are instantaneous around the world. We were still in fax machines, things were a little bit slower."

With his disappointing early season form, the focus on McIlroy will quickly refocus to his recent change to Nike clubs and his self-confessed swing troubles.

Woods managed to refrain from firing back at his critics throughout his difficulties in making a transition and said he did so because he knew that many of those commenting on his game were lacking the right knowledge.

"That's just because people don't understand. Most of the people that are commentating or analysing don't understand the game of golf, so I didn't have a problem with it," said Woods.

"They don't see it. They don't see the range sessions and they don't see the practice at home. Plus, they generally don't understand the game, especially at this level."

QPR's Redknapp rejects team drinking reports

LONDON (Reuters) - Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has rejected allegations that several players from his Premier League bottom side often stayed out until 5 a.m. drinking alcohol at a training camp in Dubai last month.

Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper quoted three unnamed players as saying the training camp descended into farce with one saying it was more like a "stag party".

Redknapp, whose side are seven points adrift at the bottom of the English top flight and looking on the verge of relegation, confirmed he had stayed in a different hotel to the squad but was incredulous about the allegations.

"If it happened they must have done something I didn't see. "I don't believe what you're saying. I can't see it," former Tottenham boss Redknapp told the paper.

QPR, owned by Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes, had a terrible start to the season under Mark Hughes but results have failed to pick up significantly since Redknapp replaced him in November.

They have won twice in 27 league games despite spending big on transfers. They play Redknapp's former side Southampton on Saturday on the manager's 66th birthday.

"Dubai was a week when we had the chance to sort out the problems. Everybody wanted to do that. But we ended up going there for a holiday. It would have been better if we'd stayed here in London," one unnamed player was quoted as saying by the Mirror.

"In the evening some players were out, until 3am, 4am, 5am - and then went to training at 8am. It was like a stag party."

Another unnamed player was equally scathing.

"Some of the bar bills were enormous, huge, in the tens of thousands of pounds for one night. Two or three players couldn't train the next day. It was that bad," he was quoted as saying.

"We have to take the blame for what we did. We know that. But some of us think that if the manager had been in the same hotel he could have controlled what was going on.

"What sort of club allows a team with 17 points and only two wins all season go and do this? It's impossible to survive like that and so this club isn't going to survive."

The club was unavailable for comment when contacted by Reuters.

Boeing to cut jobs at second Dreamliner plant - report

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 01 Maret 2013 | 08.10

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Boeing Co will cut hundreds of jobs at a South Carolina plant that makes 787 Dreamliners over the course of this year, but the move has nothing to do with the recent grounding of the troubled jetliner, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

The plan to cut workers is not uncommon as productivity improves on a new airplane program and was conceived before major problems with the 787s battery surfaced, the Journal said. Two high-profile battery malfunctions led to international aviation regulators grounding the jet in mid-January.

The cuts could account for up to 20 percent of the workforce in some teams at the plant in North Charleston, South Carolina, the Journal reported, citing an unnamed source familiar with the plan. Overall, the plant employs more than 6,000 people.

Boeing did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The South Carolina plant is the second Boeing facility where 787s are assembled after the larger Everett, Washington, plant north of Seattle. Between them, Boeing turns out five Dreamliners per month.

So far, the plane maker has said production has not been slowed by the grounding of the 787 and it aims to fulfill its plan to ramp up to 10 787s per month by the end of 2013.

Facebook, Google tech gurus to design cancer research game

By Kate Kelland

LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists from a British cancer charity are teaming up with technology gurus from the likes of Amazon, Facebook and Google to design and develop a mobile game aimed at speeding the search for new cancer drugs.

The project, led by the charity Cancer Research UK, should mean that anyone with a smart phone and five minutes to spare will be able to investigate vital scientific data at the same time as playing a mobile game.

The first step is for 40 computer programmers, gamers, graphic designers and other specialists to take part in a weekend "GameJam" to turn the charity's raw genetic data into a game format for future so-called "citizen scientists".

"We're making great progress in understanding the genetic reasons cancer develops. But the clues to why some drugs will work and some won't are held in data which need to be analysed by the human eye - and this could take years," said Carlos Caldas at Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Institute.

"By harnessing the collective power of citizen scientists we'll accelerate the discovery of new ways to diagnose and treat cancer much more precisely."

After the GameJam, which runs in London from March 1-3, an agency will build the game concept into reality and the team plans to launch it in mid 2013.

Cancer already kills more than 7.5 million people a year and the number of people with the disease worldwide is expected to surge by more than 75 percent by 2030, according to the World Health Organisation's cancer agency IARC.

CRUK's scientists are working hard to identify the genetic faults that drive cancer to try to find new ways of diagnosing and treating patients in a more targeted way based on their genetic profile and that of their tumours.

In a major international study on breast cancer genetics published last year, CRUK researchers said they are now able to classify the disease into 10 subtypes - a finding that could lead to more accurate and tailored treatment in future.

That study also found several completely new genes that drive breast cancer, offering potential targets for new types of drugs.

Yet this type of research generates colossal amounts of data that need to be analysed, CRUK said as it announced the gaming project. And while advances in technology mean scientists can process data faster than ever, much of it still needs to be analysed by people rather than machines.

"The human eye can detect subtle changes that machines are not programmed to look for - leading to serendipitous discoveries providing clues to the causes and drivers of the disease," the charity said.

"With the collective power of hundreds of thousands of people across the globe helping our scientists to analyse this data we could drastically speed up research."

Philip Su, engineering site director of Facebook London said his company believes the best way to solve a problem "is to bring smart people together to 'hack' a solution."

"That approach is just as valid in the field of life sciences as it is in software engineering," he said.

Still adjusting, McIlroy resumes battle with Woods

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 28 Februari 2013 | 08.10

By Simon Evans

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida (Reuters) - World number one Rory McIlroy will be keen to dispel any doubts about the impact of his equipment change in this week's Honda Classic where he comes up against a field featuring Tiger Woods.

McIlroy is the defending champion at the PGA National course after a victory last year that sent him to the top of the world rankings for the first time.

Since that win, where the Northern Irishman held off a late charge from Woods, McIlroy has claimed three more victories, including the PGA Championship.

But last month, the 23-year-old switched his club brand from Titleist to Nike in a lucrative deal reported to be worth as much as $250 million over 10 years.

Former world number one Nick Faldo called the change in club manufacturers "dangerous" and the concerns have hardly been eased given the two-times major winner's slow start to the year.

McIlroy has played just three professional rounds in three months, missing the cut in the Abu Dhabi Championship last month and suffering a first-round exit in the WGC-Accenture World Match Play Championship last week in Arizona.

While there is plenty of speculation about how tricky he might be finding the adjustment to new clubs, McIlroy certainly is not feeling the pressure yet.

"It's fine, I knew coming into it was going to be a bit of a process and I knew it there was going to be comments if it didn't happen for me right way," he told reporters.

"I'm only two tournaments into the season. I've still got 20 to go. So it's not like I'm in any rush; it's not like I'm pushing for answers or I'm looking for answers. Everything's there. It's just a matter of putting it all together."

McIlroy is not, of course, the first top player to have to adjust to the feel of new clubs after a commercial move, as Woods himself noted.

"I went through equipment changes over the years, but as I said, it's over the years," said Woods.

"There have been a lot of players who have done wholesale changes with sponsorships. I think Ernie (Els) has played for every company there is out there. There are a few guys who have done that and they have had a lot of success, and there are a lot of stories where they have not done well and been off the tour soon.

"Rory, understandably, he's going through the process. We talked about it a little bit. It is a process. The good news is about today's equipment, we have so many different ways of testing it and tracking it and getting numbers, which back in the days ... that wasn't the case."

Woods will be looking to recover from his own first round exit in Arizona to Charles Howell III, although he is not too worried about a loss in the matchplay format.

"Generally if you're missing a cut, you're probably not playing that well. I actually played well, and only played one day," said Woods. "He made a couple more birdies, and that's just the nature of the business in that format."

McIlroy says he is still in "an adjustment period" but said he is more concerned with his swing than the feel of new clubs.

"I would like to get back to where I was say the middle of last year," said McIlroy. "Because if you put my swing now up the way I was swinging it last year, it's chalk and cheese. So that's the real thing that I'm working on."

The Honda Classic has grown in stature in recent years, largely thanks to the participation of McIlroy and Woods as part of a strong field.

World number five Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and his compatriot, British Open champion Ernie Els, are among the contenders along with English pair Justin Rose and Lee Westwood.

Young Americans Keegan Bradley and Rickie Fowler and Australian Geoff Ogilvy will also be looking to make their mark ahead of next week's WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral near Miami.

Atletico set up Cup final with Real Madrid

By Mark Elkington

MADRID (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid set up a King's Cup final with city rivals Real after Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao scored in a 2-2 second leg draw at Sevilla on Wednesday, to progress 4-3 on aggregate.

Costa, who had scored both Atletico goals from the penalty spot in the first leg, put the visitors in charge after carving an opening for himself in the sixth minute and firing low into the far corner.

His seventh goal in the Cup made him the competition's leading scorer this season, one ahead of Real's Cristiano Ronaldo and Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo.

The Brazilian striker then broke away down the left and crossed low for Colombia's Falcao, who darted in front of his marker to score in the 29th.

Roared on by a noisy home crowd, Sevilla's most dangerous player Jesus Navas breathed life back in to the tie with a curling shot that went in off the far post just before the break.

Sevilla, who beat Atletico 2-0 in the 2010 Cup final, pressed hard in the second half but did not find a way past Thibaut Courtois again until Ivan Rakitic scored in time added on.

By then, Sevilla had lost their cool with Gary Medel being sent off 14 minutes from time, and Geoffrey Kondogbia was red-carded at the end, both for fouls on Costa.

Nine-times Cup winners Atletico will meet their neighbours Real in the May 18 final after Jose Mourinho's men swept past holders Barcelona on Tuesday to secure a 4-2 aggregate victory.

The venue for the match has still to be decided.

"To reach a final is very important for Atletico," Falcao told Spanish television.

"We went in search of a result from the beginning. We knew they would come at us and leave spaces. We made the most of it and took our chances.

On the incidents with Costa, Falcao added: "The end of the game was ugly. These things happen in games with a lot to play for, but we leave it out there on the pitch."

THORN IN SIDE

Costa, 24, has muscled his way into Atletico's starting team this year with some outstanding performances in recent weeks.

He was a constant thorn in the side for Sevilla with his driving runs, his power in the air, and his ability to get under the skin of his opponents.

The fiery Medel saw red after picking up two yellow cards in the same incident, the second for appearing to kick Costa while he was on the ground.

Kondogbia received a straight red after he committed a foul on the Brazilian and then stamped on him between his legs.

"We know Costa is provocative but we fell for it," Negredo told Spanish television.

Reaching the final shows the continued improvement of Atletico since Simeone took the helm just over a year ago.

The former Argentina captain, who helped the club win their last Cup as a player in 1996, guided the side to the Europa League final last season where they beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0.

They swept aside Champions League winners Chelsea 4-1 in the season-opening European Super Cup, and have surprised many by holding off Real Madrid to hang on to second place in La Liga behind leaders Barcelona for so long.

Atletico have not beaten Real in over a decade but Simeone was not prepared to discuss the final.

"It shows a lack of respect to Sevilla to talk about Real Madrid after this game against a great rival," he said.

Hyundai agrees to settle fuel economy cases in U.S.

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 27 Februari 2013 | 08.10

By Deepa Seetharaman

DETROIT (Reuters) - Hyundai Motor Co has agreed in principle to settle several lawsuits from U.S. consumers who said they were duped by the automaker's misleading fuel economy claims, according to a filing made in federal court on Tuesday.

Hyundai's affiliate Kia Motors Corp, also being sued for overstating the fuel economy of some models, is evaluating whether to join the settlement, according to the filing.

Both companies are facing lawsuits after announcing in early November that they overstated the fuel economy performance on more than 1 million recently sold vehicles by at least one mile per gallon.

A settlement amount was not disclosed. Hyundai offered a lump sum payment option as part of its settlement proposal.

Lawyers for Hyundai and the plaintiff drivers said they plan to file more details on the settlement with the court. A hearing to discuss the accord and how to implement it is scheduled for Thursday morning.

The companies' admission came after a probe by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which found errors in the mileage ratings of 13 Hyundai and Kia models from 2011 to 2013 model years.

Both companies agreed to compensate owners for the added fuel costs. Under the plan, customers will receive a debit card that will reimburse them for the difference in fuel economy, plus an extra 15 percent to acknowledge the inconvenience.

The news was a blow to Hyundai and Kia, both of which bragged about their vehicles' superior fuel economy in advertisements. Hyundai's "4 x 40" strategy centered on offering four models that got 40 mpg, including the Elantra small car.

Hyundai said in Tuesday's court filing that it would offer a lump sum option to drivers in lieu of its reimbursement plan.

Current drivers who bought one of the four Hyundai models that claimed to get 40 mpg will get a higher lump sum payment compensation, according to Hyundai's proposed settlement. Those models include the Accent compact car, the hybrid version of the Sonata sedan and the Veloster small car.

Missed diagnoses common in the doctor's office

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 26 Februari 2013 | 08.10

REUTERS - Missed or wrong diagnoses are common in primary care and may put some patients at risk of serious complications, according to a U.S. study.

Mistakes in surgery and medication prescribing have been at the center of patient safety efforts, but researchers whose findings appeared in JAMA Internal Medicine said less attention has been paid to missed diagnoses in the doctor's office.

Because of how common they are, those errors may lead to more patient injuries and deaths than other mistakes, according to David Newman-Toker from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, who co-wrote a commentary on the study.

"We have every reason to believe that diagnostic errors are a major, major public health problem," Newman-Toker told Reuters Health. "You're really talking about at least 150,000 people per year, deaths or disabilities that are resulting from this problem."

For the study, researchers used electronic health records to track 190 diagnostic errors made during primary care visits at one of two healthcare facilities. In each of those cases, the misdiagnosed patient was hospitalized or turned up back at the office or emergency room within two weeks.

The study team found the type of missed diagnosis varied widely. Pneumonia, heart failure, kidney failure and cancer each accounted for between five and seven percent of conditions doctors initially diagnosed as something else.

Most diagnostic errors could have caused moderate or severe harm to the patient, the researchers determined. Of the 190 patients with diagnostic errors, 36 had serious permanent damage and 27 died.

One of the difficulties in making an accurate diagnosis is that certain common symptoms, such as stomach ache or shortness of breath, could be signs of a range of illnesses, both serious and not, researchers said.

"If you look at the types of chief complaints that these things occur with, they're fairly common chief complaints," said Hardeep Singh, who led the study at the Houston VA Health Services Research and Development Center of Excellence.

"If somebody would come in with mild shortness of breath and a little bit of cough, people would think you might have bronchitis, you might have phlegm... and lo and behold they would come back two days later with heart failure," he told Reuters Health.

Most of the missed diagnoses were traced back to the office visit and the doctor not getting an accurate patient history, doing a full exam or ordering the correct tests.

One thing patients can do, the researchers agreed, is come to the office prepared to give their doctor all of the relevant information about the nature and timing of their symptoms.

"I do think it's important for a patient to question or observe the doctor," Newman-Toker said. "Ask pointed questions: 'what else could this be? What things are you most concerned about?'"

In addition, patients shouldn't assume that they're fine if they develop new symptoms or their symptoms worsen, just because the doctor initially diagnosed something not serious.

"We need to get patients more engaged in the conversation with the providers," Singh said. "I think the main message is: how do we effectively (make diagnoses) together?" SOURCE: http://bit.ly/MbBLbb

Cities across Pak plunge into darkness after power breakdown

From Rezaul H Laskar Islamabad, Feb 24 (PTI) Cities across Pakistan, including the capital, Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar, plunged into darkness today after a major breakdown in the national power grid, officials said. The blackout began at about 11.30 pm after a privately run 1,200 MW thermal power plant in southwestern Balochistan province developed a fault and stopped generating electricity. "The HUBCO (Hub Power Company) plant developed a fault and the load was transferred to the Mangla and Tarbela hydel projects but they tripped. After that, several smaller powerhouses tripped," Javed Parvez, CEO of the Islamabad Electric Supply Company, told the media. The Mangla and Tarbela power projects had resumed generating electricity and efforts were being made to restore the supply of power to cities in phases, Parvez said. Power had been restored in parts of a few cities, including Islamabad, he added. The Prime Minister was monitoring efforts to restore power supply. Parvez declined to say how long it would take to bring the entire national grid back on line. TV news channels reported that almost 80 per cent of the country was without power. The blackout affected operations at several airports and railway services. Reports said most cities in all four provinces were without power, including Peshawar, the capital of northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Quetta, the capital of southwestern Balochistan. Reports said more than 30 grid stations had tripped in Karachi, the country's largest city. In Balochistan, at least 18 districts were affected by the blackout. PTI RHL COR DDC

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 24 Februari 2013 | 08.10

Italy goes to election on Sunday and Monday with no clear indication of a definite outcome. So, will Italy go the Greece way; will it need a second election, what impact will that have on the Euro Zone and of course on global markets?

Euro looks weak ahead of polls in Italy: StanChart

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, Alessandro Mercuri, Interest Rate Strategist at Lloyds Banking Group shared his outlook on Italy's election.

Further Mercuri said that there is a degree of uncertainty because of two weeks blackout period for opinion polls.

Outcome of Italy election deeply uncertain

"Most of the markets are working on the assumption that the coalition led by Pier Luigi Bersani with participation of Mario Monti will be formed after the election. There is also a possibility of a hung parliament," he added.

How to trade your favourite stocks during Budget week?

If the Budget disappoints the market, Nifty may break 5800, says Sudip Bandyopadhyay, MD & CEO, Destimoney Securities. In such an eventuality, he says, the level of 5500-5600 is likely.

Bandyopadhyay helps investors out with their investment queries as part of moneycontrol.com's initiative Know Your Investment.

Below are his answers to questions investors asked us on our Facebook page.

Dr. Jayesh Gaygol: What is a target of Tinplate in six months? Will it cross Rs 55?

A: Tinplate is India's largest indigenous producer of tin coated and tin free steel sheets providing packaging solutions to the food processing industry and also caters to other industries like Chemicals, Paints, Electronics and Defense etc. It enjoys around 35% market share in India. The company reported strong performance in Dec quarter with 65% growth in topline & 33% in bottomline. Since you are looking for a short term horizon - I believe that in the short term it might move upto 55 levels but one should keep a strict stop loss.

Priya Nambiar: What are your views on Cochin Minerals and Rutile ?

A: CMRL's main product is Synthetic Rutile, which finds application as raw material for the Titanium pigment and titanium sponge/metal industry. Other products are by products.  Ferric Chloride has applications as an etching agent and is an effective coagulant for drinking water and effluent treatment. Ferrous Chloride is coagulant for drinking water and effluent treatment. Iron Hydroxide (Cemox) clay used for brick and tile making.

During H1FY12, net profit rose by 224% to Rs35.0 crore on 50% higher sales of Rs138.6 crore. OP and NP margin stood at 39.6% and 25.3% Vs 20.4% and 11.7% respectively in H1FY12. H1FY13 EPS works out to Rs44.9 Vs Rs13.8 in H1FY12."

There has been improvement in the global demand for Synthetic Rutile/and Ferric Chloride in the sea water desalination plant in Gulf countries and for Ferrous chloride in sewage treatment plants in African Countries. It exports more than 80% of its production and in the current scenario where the Rupee is weakening against the USD, the company could benefit out of higher Rupee realization. These give strong visibility to revenue going forward.  At the CMP of Rs267, the share is trading at a P/E of 3.2x on FY13E and 2.8x on FY14E.

Mukesh Lovely Thareja: What is your call on Titan ?

A: Titan is a good buy for medium / long term.  This is fundamentally a very strong company and will continue to deliver excellent results and growth over the next few years.

Santosh Dubey: I am new in market and want to invest in currency and gold. So please suggest me should I wait some more time to buy gold or should I start buying now?

A: If you are a long term investor, you can start buying gold now.  Gold price will keep fluctuating based on multiple factors in the short term.  However, in the long run, we believe that there is a secular up trend.  But it should also be kept in mind that the return from Gold will not be as spectacular as it was during the last few years.  Gold will provide a steady return of 8-12% over the next 12 months.

Varun Bhatia: I have 50 shares of L&T at Rs 1690 a share? What should I do, hold or sell?

A: L&T is an excellent company.  We believe that prospect of L&T is good in medium / long term.   India's infrastructure story will help L&T.  Being efficient and well managed provides it with an edge.

As soon as the investment cycle starts in India, L&T will be the biggest beneficiary.

Prasad Dhodapkar: What is your call L&T Finance ?

A: L&T Finance is a strong candidate for a banking license.  However, this expectation is already factored in by the market and this reflects in the price.  Considering the parentage and it's fundamental strength, we believe that L&T Finance is a good hold for medium / long term.

Chitresh Lunawat: What is your call on Madhucon Projects ?

A: India's GDP growth has clearly slowed down and both infrastructure and capital goods sectors are suffering the most.  The pains points are yet to be removed.  From the value perspective, the infrastructure companies look attractive.  However, we believe that the time for value buying in these sectors haven't yet come.  It is better to avoid Madhucon Project in short / medium term.

Anshuman Chakrapani: What's your view on JP Associates ?

A: JP Associates is a fundamentally strong company.  However, the problem ailing the infrastructure and capital good sectors, may also affect JP Associates.  At current levels, JP Associates can be acquired for a medium / long term.  However, in the short term, till the economic environment improves, JP Associates may continue to struggle.

Nilesh Gala: What your view on TV18 and Mirza International ? Also can you tell me about Shalimar Paints ?

A: TV18 has corrected significantly in the recent past.  At current levels, this looks good. Exposure can be taken in TV18.

Mirza International has improved performance over the last few quarters.  However it is better to stick to established large cap and mid cap stocks.

Anuj Khatri: IT majors held out during this recent turbulent ride. Should one go ahead n buy or be at sideline and wait for a dip? Also, I bought drowning Tata Steel at Rs 366. Should I wait for a upswing or get out? Please suggest stop-loss, time horizon?

A: Large cap IT companies have been performing well inspite of the global turmoil.  We believe that TCS and HCL will continue to outperform and deliver good results.  Exposure can be taken whenever there is a correction.

Regarding small and mid cap, one needs to be extremely careful.  While opportunities exist in the market place, performances of these companies are not assured.

TATA Steel has probably seen the worst.  We expect that performance will improve hereon.   Domestic production is increasing as a percentage of overall production.  This should significantly help in overall margins.  The long term investor can explore entering or remaining invested TATA Steel at current levels.
